Sheep and Aberdeen Cattle

ANKENY ACRES

Aberdeen Moderator Cattle:

In 2006, after the AAA began to include percentage cattle in the registry, we started our herd of moderator cattle.  We bought some full blood Red Poll heifers. These cows were the beginning of our cross breeding program. First using our black Aberdeen bull and then AI breeding to “Bluey” the only Red Aberdeen bull at that time. In 2009 we were able to buy our first red bull “Red Baron”, an Australian import from the Vitulus Lowline Stud.  He has been the backbone of our Red program, producing high quality FB & % females for our herd expansion. Our herd is about 80% red or red  carriers. In 2010 we purchased ALM Bess, the mother of the true red gene. We now have females in production from Bess and Baron and more on the way.

Aberdeen Cattle

Black Aberdeen Herd

As all breeders in the early years of the Aberdeen breed we were limited to the homozygous black Angus cattle. We started with 4 heifers and one bull from the Spur Ranch in Montana. The bull LB Ike 66K, a son of the great Brambletye Bosun's Mate, became our Aberdeen base. He produced our next herd bull, AA Bosun Legal T67, which was the combination of Athanlee Herman breeding on the dams' side moving us forward even more. The base of our black cattle came from that line. We are now in a new faze of our breeding program which involves the use of Ardrossan genetics and Red Baron influence.

Today and the Future

Today at Ankeny Acres we run 30-40 mother Aberdeen and  Aberdeen moderator cows on dry range, spring pasture and summer and fall irrigated pastures.  Our focus seems to be on marketing female breeding stock, both reds and blacks, weaned and yearling grass calves and using the full-blood males for grass-finished beef.  We are becoming red dominated which seems to be our future.  The out-cross we have infused into our red cattle is exciting and can be a great addition to any herd.  We welcome your inquiires about our cattle for sale.
